Approach

Rising water is only a threat to people who never built the gate.

Tidegate Partners is a private holding company. It is not a fund, it has no outside investors, and it is not assembling anything for sale.

—The Name

Why a gate, and not a dam.

On low coastlines, a tidegate sits where fresh water meets salt. It is a hinged door and very little else. When the tide runs in, the door closes and the land behind it stays dry. When the tide falls, the door opens and the water drains away.

It is worth being precise about what that is not. A dam stops a river and takes the consequences of stopping it. A tidegate does not stop anything — it takes an inevitable, twice-daily force and makes it one-directional. The tide still comes. It simply no longer decides what happens to the ground behind the gate.

That is the whole of our thinking. We do not try to generate force, predict it, or resist it. We put ourselves in the one position where an ordinary tide reliably leaves something behind — and then we maintain the gate, which is the unglamorous part nobody writes about.

—Principles
01

We choose the direction, not the weather

Markets move on their own. Rates, seasons, credit conditions and the price of a house on the Gulf are none of them ours to set, and a firm that believes otherwise eventually discovers it was leveraged to an opinion.

What we control is placement. Which businesses we are in, what we let capital run toward, and — far more often — what we hold it back from. Most of the work of this company is refusal.

02

We operate what we own

We are not allocators. There is no diligence memo that tells you what a business is like at seven in the morning when something has gone wrong, and we would rather know that than read about it.

Each company here has its own people and its own P&L, and is run as a real business rather than a line item. Tidegate provides the balance sheet, the standard, and the patience. It does not provide a committee.

03

We buy things we intend to keep

A holding period of ten years changes every decision made in year one. It rules out the cheap version of the renovation, the hire who is merely available, and the customer who is not worth having.

It also removes the pressure to look impressive on a schedule. We are not marking anything to market for anyone, which means a business is permitted to take the time it actually needs.

04

We keep it small enough to know

Four companies is a number a small group of people can hold in their heads properly — the customers, the staff, the buildings, what is fragile about each one.

We will add to that when something genuinely belongs here, and not to reach a number. Scale that costs us the understanding is not scale we want.

We would rather own four good things for twenty years than forty for two.
